Brief History of Darjeeling
Located in the lower Himalayas at an average elevation of 6,982 ft (2,134 m), it is the headquarter of Darjeeling district, During the British Raj, Darjeeling's temperate climate led to its development as a hill station (hill town) for British residents to escape the heat of the plains during summer.
Darjeeling is internationally famous for its tea industry and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tea plantations date back to the mid 19th century as part of a British development plan. The tea growers of the area developed distinctive hybrids of black tea and fermenting techniques, with many blends considered among the worlds finest. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connecting the town with the plains was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 and is run by steam engines a few of which are still in service in India. Darjeeling has several British-style public schools, which attract students from many parts of India and neighboring countries. The town, along with neighboring Kalimpong was a major transit route for business with Nepal and China through old mountain passes and horse tracks.

The Douglas lounge bar is an idyllic setting to unwind after a long day. This lounge bar is dedicated to the great artist from Darjeeling, Mr. Goray Douglas (1920-1976).What makes this place more special is that MAYFAIR has showcased a collection of original works from this great artist. Tender Hearts: For the kids and the kid-at-heart we have this fantastic fun place called “Tender Hearts”. Here, we have loads of soft toys, games and other amusements that will put the little dolls in good mood. There is also a huge collection of all kinds of cartoon and children films that they will love to watch again and again. Stay a while, play a little, we bet you’ll enjoy it.
Gymkhana Club: Have a break and play your favorite indoor sport here. Lawn tennis, badminton and roller-skating are available at the Darjeeling Gymkhana Club for our guests. Please make sure to collect your pass from the reception. MAYFAIR also has an in-house pool room and facilities for indoor games viz table tennis, carom and chess.
